most people will say 'buy a scratching post'

but honestly, that doesnt really work. i have 3 cats, and they all LOVE scratching the couch lol. and i do have a scratching post that only one cat uses. but she still scratches the couch.

what i do is use a spray bottle and spray them. they wont like the water in their face. plus you never have to get up lol if youre not already by the couch. hope this helped :)

ohh i just read some other peoples answers -- 1.declawing a cat actually hurts them. pretty much they get their claws ripped out of their cute little paws. i would not reccomend that. and so would a lot of animal lovers. and 2. use claw covers. you can buy them at pets mart or petco. they come in really cool colors and last for a while :)

Do NOT DE-claw! A spray bottle of water, combined with two sided tape on the couch. Scratching is also a form of scenting. I would try and spray some 'frabreeze' on the area. Then place the two sided tape. Spray on stream when they approach the target area, just before they start the clawing.

When my cat used to scratch my couch, I had a water bottle that I would squirt at the cat when it started to scratch & after a while it shouldn't do it because it will think it is going to get wet hope this helps

I would not recommend getting him declawed, it's inhumane. I would get a spray bottle and spray him every time he goes to scratch or get on the counters. That's what I do with my cat. She has gotten to know VERY well what she shouldn't be doing. All I have to do is just show her the bottle now. She might try and back talk with her kitty language but she will stop what ever it is I'm scolding her for.

i saw something in a pet magazine that keeps cats from scratching furniture. i think it was some type of material you put on the furniture so the cat wont want to scratch it. or you could try tape. good luck!!

Those horizontal scratchers made of cardboard seem to fulfill the scratching needs of most cats. After I got one my cats never cared to go after the furniture anymore.

This is a nasty which cats have. Mine used to do it all the time. The answer under me is definitely the best as it is exactly what I did. I got a spray bottle and sprayed some water at him every time he did it. He hated it and now very rarely does it.

declaw him. It's the only way. I know some are against it...like my sister but all her rugs and furniture is ruined. Beleive me she has done everything. One option to try is a product they sell at pet stores that are plastic things you slip on thier nails. Good luck

Staple a piece of thick carpet to the sofa where he scratches.

You could get him de-clawed (which most vets won't do anymore because it's cruel) or, they have these little rubber thingys you can glue to their claws so prevent scratching.
