The process to make the wine is the most diverse in the world. For beer there is how many types of barely used? Maybe 10? Did you know there are over 100 different types of grapes?
Wine comes in all types, white, sparkling, red, rose, zinfadel, ect...
The taste, smoothness, and texture of the wine, not to mention the freshness and alcohol content are all important. too much alcohol spoils the grapes.
Here are some attractive tips...
when you swirl wine you are looking for the pour marks on the side of the glass. The faster the glass starts to rain, or the wine drips off the glass and back into the liquid determines the alcohol content (high alcohol moves faster) and the density. Some wines are "thincker" in taste then others.
Champagne is only called that becasue it is made from grapes specifically grown in Champagne France. Everything else is just a sparkling white wine.
When looking at Champagne or sparkling wines, the bubble size denotes the quality. Larger bubbles equal less quality. Look for small bubbles...
In my personal opinion California Wines are crap, Italy, Greece, and France make some of the better wines out there, they use more types of grapes and have an age old process (older then the entire USA) I have drank wines that came from Wineries who have not changed the recipe or the method for 600 years.

It is a drink that dates back through history and with this comes culture, expertise and a multiplicity of reasons for drinking a wine with a specific dish or for a certain occaison. It is a fun and interesting hobby because you meet other enthusiasts and learn about geography, weather conditions, agriculture and foof. It is social too.
But the fact remains that if you do not like the taste, you will not find it attractive.

I could call myself a professional drinker... i guess... but the real answer is (at least from me) is the elegance of the glass and the breadth of color. You just look sexy drinking wine. And it looks amazing in the glass.

the fact that you can learn about the complexities of flavors so its a drink for those who quest knoledge or those who are trying to make themselves look smart. theres also really nothing sexier than a blood red fluid rolling out of a crystal glass over a pair of full sexy lips.
