I had one three years ago. The root canal didn't hurt, because the dentist will numb your mouth first. The needles they use are so small you will not really feel any pain; it will be more like a weird pressure in your mouth.
If you are feeling really nervous and don't want to hear the drill, ask the dentist if you can bring an Ipod or walk-man type radio with headphones and listen to music while he is working.
You will be fine. Thinking about it before it happened was far worse than the actual dentist visit.
Please come back here and edit your post to let us know how it went.
Good Luck and don't be so nervous.

yes I have, and I was wide awake through the whole thing. It doesnt hurt. just think of something funny or picture yourself on the beach or your favorite place. Everytime I've been to the dentist, the dentist always admired my root canal, and how well it was put on. But next week , I have to get my 7 teeth on top pulled. Dentures, "yuk", so if I were you , you should get that root canal. The most pain that hurts is keeping your mouth open so long, . GOOD Luck!!!

I have had a root canal and no it did not hurt me in the least.as with going to the dentist if you are a big chicken like me the worst part is the needle, but then after that you are numb and you can't feel any pain.If i remember right it takes 2or 3 visits but this is just to make sure everything is done properly,so there you go i'm not lying to you and you will pat yourself on the back once it is over because it looks and feels just like a real tooth.Hope this has helped you,janstacy59@netzero.net

It doesnt hurt even a little bit! Not at all!! Make sure you go to an endodontist. They specialize in doing only root canals.
The days of root canals hurting and taking a long time are over. But you have to go to someone who is good.

I'm a dentist.
The only thing you get done at the dentist's office that should hurt is the injection. Fillings, root canals, extractions, crown-lengthenings, etc., etc., shouldn't hurt. We dentists are not the ministers of pain that people make us out to be.
You may have some soreness after the procedure, however, the vast majority of my patients for whom I have peformed root canal therapy have reported minimal if any post-operative discomfort.
Relax. Part of your doctor's job is to make sure that you are comfortable.

I had root canal five days ago and it was totally PAINLESS. I didn't even feel a thing when I was given the needle to numb the areas. A lot of it is dependent on the skill of the surgeon but for the most part, it is a painless procedure. In fact, I even dozed off I was so relaxed! Good luck.

It doesn't hurt during the procedure (unless they don't wait for it to completely numb like they did me) however after the root canal is finished and the novacaine wears off it did hurt quite a bit, but after a few days pass it becomes more of a annoyance than anything. Hope I helped!

I swear to god I was worried the first time as well. I couldn't beleive that it didn't hurt at all. I have had about 4 of them and it's a piece of cake. I prefer getting a root canal more so that a filling.
Honest!

hi' i am a dental student and i think i can help u with this. during the procedure..dentists give a local anesthesia to ur gums and the operated portion. there r specific curved and small dental needles which hardly cause pain.in this procedure..there is removal of the tooth pulp as it becomes infected with bacteria. so after the procedure or the treatment....there is no posiibility of pain as the vital part or the living part of the tooth is already removed. the tooth is almost dead biologically. so NO PAIN.

Not if you have novacaine it doesn't. Don't worry about it. After the pain meds just relax. I always bring something to squeeze anytime I go in to have anything done on my teeth, even cleaning.
