My son is 4 and he is the only child i want to get him a kitten for a little companionship. We live in an apartment and can't have puppies. He is a quite and gentle kid not hyper or anything so i am almost sure he would be good w/ the kitten. What do you think?

Please don't declaw a cat. A cat only scratches when it is afraid, overwhelmed, or protecting itself. Children should learn that animals get afraid too. Usually they warn you before they scratch. If you got scratched you missed the clues. Have your child use toys to play with the cat and not his hands, fingers or toes otherwise the cat will attack those when he wants to play. Scratching posts are great, however your cat will have to be taught to use it. You can rub it with catnip or try putting toys on top of it. I think getting a kitten would be a wonderful idea. It would teach responsibility, and give unconditional love. Another idea would be to go and find a cat that was put up for adoption. A good agency will already know if the cat is good with children, other animals, and the basic personality of the cat. Most times they will charge a fee but the animal will have been spayed or neutered, have been dewormed and had the first round of shots. Some will even give you a home trial, if it doesn't work out you can return it and get your money back. Sounds odd but my sister took one back and got one that got along with her dog.

I have a sweet little gentle son who is almost four. He has two cats and a dog at his dad's that he gets along with just fine. Infact I think it's great. My son is an only child and he needs someone to play with. I must say that because these animals are all at dad's house this works out really well for me too. I have to say that I pretty much requested they get the cats declwed for the sake of my son. Everything seems to be going well as far as the animals are concerned. So as long as you are up for it.

Be sure to watch out fo r the first few months ,cause baby kitties tend to like to bite.Even though your childlooks quite gentle with pets, still go over the rules. No throwing kitty,no kicking kitty,no hitting kitty,etc......

When I was 1 I got a kitten(i was a only child back then)And,13 years later ,I still have the silly kitty named toto.

Of course, but remember that you're the one getting the kitten, not him.
I think that's a great idea, though, and you'd be surprised at how gentle even rough little boys can be when there are baby animals around!

yeah I say that would be great the kid will love it. But be advised to watch the kid with it,he may mistreat it since he doesn't know nay better. Teach him to be gentle with the cat and not let him push her around or slap the cat. I've seen kids do this and you gotta watch them. The cat may end up biting or scratch him. Don't let him in a room alone with the cat, you never know what he'll do. Secondly keep him away from the litter box they love to get in it. So just watch him like a hawk!

You know, kittens turn into cats. Cats are big angry people who cannot fill the needs of children. Cats can take abuse. Dont abuse your cat. It will eat you.

Also you have to train the cat. Training the cat is much like a child. Just rub their face in the poo, and all will be successfull. Only with this information, should ur child get the cat. god help us all.

Sure..why not. Just make sure you supervise. NEVER declaw a cat. It's inhumane and cruel. When kittens are little, it's not that hard to get them used to clipping the tip off the nails. Keep in mind that they are very sharp!

I highly recommend it!
I have always had cats and when you get a kitten with a small child they grow and learn together. They will have a great relationship!
