Why are you so obsessed with a God who doesn't exist?

2006-06-11 19:04:10 · 13 answers · asked by hillbilly_mama123 2 in Society & Culture Religion & Spirituality

The point of the question was to find out why atheists (who believe there is no God or gods, pagan or otherwise) and some agnostics try so hard to prove their isn't a God. If I find comfort and purpose in my belief, why try so hard to exterminate that belief? Why call me names like Godidiot or Bible thumper (both of which I bear proudly). Perhaps I'm generalizing, but aren't all of you generalizing as well to think that Christians are uneducated and insane to believe?

By the way, I will be posting answers to this question on my Yahoo 360 blog. If anyone has a problem with that, let me know, and your answer will be withheld.

I'm not getting a straight answer here. Everyone says they're not obsessed but then continue on to say that religion is destructive and God doesn't exist. Just be honest with yourself and everyone else. Admit you obsess about it and tell me why.

I am on a crusade to elevate the gene pool. I want to bestow the gift of rational thought and logic unto the world. God makes people bypass thinking and responsibility and makes them become sheep.

why are you obsessed with a god you cant prove exists. and believe in a book that was written by other humans? i dont see the need for a god or belief to live this life. i think knowledge and love and caring is enough.

They're just trying to save you from wasting your life, darlin'. It's like a Baptist worrying about all those folks who haven't made a personal commitment to Jesus, only it's from the other side of the fence. You think they're stupid and doomed and they feel the same way about you. Except for the ones who don't and are just tired of all the noise.

You mistake concern for the mental state of the human species with obsession for an imaginary God.

I'm not.

I'm obsessed with the fact that superstition leads people, including people who can call others to war, to make decisions based on what they think an invisible man in the sky wants them to do.

If someone says that their refrigerator tells them to do something, they're crazy. If they say that god tells them to do something, they're "doing god's word."

I think that this is incredibly dangerous.

I'm an agnostic I'm not sure if God exists or not. I dunno I guess I don't understand why God would through a good kind hearted person on to in to the lake of fire just coz they didn't believe or had another religion. I dunno why if there is God there is so much suffering in the world.

Religion is the most dangerous and destructive thing on earth. But people are so convinced of its rightness that no amount of reasonable argument will shake them out of their sleepwalk towards doom.

Mockery, on the other hand, will often make them sit up and take notice. (It worked on you, didn't it?)

I find the holy war that Christians are waging on Islam to be interesting. I also am interested in how amazingly gullible Christians can be,, and how arrogantly proud of their ignorance.

I, for one, am not. I am here to learn about other world religions and not to "disprove 'god'". This section is for ALL people. :-) Not all atheists/agnostics/humanists/etc are obsessed.
