"Salt" used to be one of the most precious commodities in the world, because it could be used for anything like curing meat and adding taste. Thus, "salt of the earth" means something very valuable and useful on the earth.

this phrase was spoken by Jesus to the 12 apostles at what is commonly termed the sermon on the mount..Matthew chapter 5 verse 13 ... he was instructing them on what their role was to be and how they should conduct themselves...that is...to be IN the world, but APART from it..(leading by their example and not acting in ways that others would normally act that they knew to be sinful or wrong)

Jesus often talked in this way, comparing one thing to another in order to illustrate his point..if you read the verses AFTER he talks of the salt of the earth it might give you a better idea :) Matthew chapter 5 verses 14 - 16

salt at that time was an extremely valuable commodity - even more so than gold, which today we consider valuable - so to refer to them as this can sometimes be taken to mean how precious they were, although that is not a scriptural interpretation but rather a comment on the cultural "norm" of the time.

hope this is of help to you..and God Bless :)

actually, salt of the earth means a curse.. a scourge. to sprinkle salt on the earth ensures that nothing will grow in that spot again. It means bitter, acidic, coldhearted.. a plague, a scourge.. an unwelcome pest
