I use different software for all the above. For spam, Lavasoft AdAware and Panicware Popup Stopper do an awesome job. I usually use the Windows Firewall itself which provides sufficient protection (it comes with Windows XP Service Pack 2). Commercially, the Zone Alarm software is a great personal firewall.
Besides the AdAware and Popup Stopper software are free!

Go to www.grisoft.com. You can download free anti-virus software/ and personal firewall protection. It was so good I eventually bought the professional version. However that is an option. You are never forced to.
