well, i don't know how "the princess" does it. i've owned cats my whole life and the kitten has to be pretty old before i've had any luck in sexing them.
my vet doesn't seem to have a problem with it, she just flips them over and says if its a boy or a girl--and i can look at the same kitten and i SWEAR there's no difference in the anatomy. i guess that's why she went to vet school.
the only way i can tell the difference is when the male kitten is a little older and the testicles actually start to develop. this can lead to embarrassing situations later in the cat's life however. i had a kitten when i was a kid--and evidently the cat was a slow developer because she got the name "Patsy".
later on when "Patsy" finally grew a respectable set of balls the name caused a lot of raised eyebrows.
i admit---i'm a failure at sexing kittens!

At birth.
All you have to do is lift the little tail and look at the opening under the anus, the litttle girls will show a little opening close to the anus and the little boys, you will see a raised dark area beneath the anus, sometime it looks like a little heart, which will develop into the testicles and below this, is the penis.
As the males gets older the little heart will be more visible. Male cats can become sexually active as young as 6 months. An will start to spray and mark their territory.
Talk to your vet about sterilization.

Sometimes you can tell straight away if you look in the correct spot! If you can't tell easily enough after a week or so, get a vet to check them out for you when they have their first check up.
