Today’s hot dogs are made of quality lean cuts of beef and pork blended with a variety of spices and seasonings, and then fully cooked, much in the same way that sausages are made. The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) requires that the meats used must be wholesome and high quality, just like the fresh ground meat sold in supermarkets and butcher shops. The government also requires that the meats used in the hot dog must be listed in order of predominance. Supermarkets also offer other varieties of hot dogs such as all beef, poultry (chicken or turkey), and cheese-flavored.
