Many reasons some being
Difficult or unusual name - so a nickname is easier
A private joke or secret message - between friends and partners
To keep your privacy - if people don't know your real name it keeps them at a distance
Having the same name as someone else - Nickname is then used to identify who you are talking about

What it says about are relationships is in a partnership/marriage it is a shared code that brings you together, With friends it says you have been accepted and online it is all about creating a persona that keeps people from know who we really are

Too lazy to say persons real name, that nickname tends to cling to the person. Or if chatting online, we do not want others to know your gender.

For example:
Alexander=Alex
or
Alexander=Monkey. People wonder 'Is "Monkey" a boy or girl?'

: : An Old English word "eke" or "neke" meaning "additional" became neke-name and hopped over to nickname.
