Too lazy to say persons real name, that nickname tends to cling to the person. Or if chatting online, we do not want others to know your gender.
For example:
Alexander=Alex
or
Alexander=Monkey. People wonder 'Is "Monkey" a boy or girl?'

: : : Why is a nickname called a 'nick' name? We know it's a sort of alias, usually (although not always) affectionate. But why 'nick'?
: : An Old English word "eke" or "neke" meaning "additional" became neke-name and hopped over to nickname.

nicknames are used to
1.) show degrees of intimacy...
2.) to shorten one's lenghty name
3.) to give a different aura and give oneself an edge
4.) the original name do not fit. example: the ugliest guy in the neighborhood was named Adonis but he's not an Adonis at all.
5.) as codes.

because people want their own language. it makes them feel special and in control. what does it say about your relationship - you have to be more specific as to what your nickname is. I guess if it's derogatory it probably unmasks some kind of unresolved hostility.
