Jesus made some things really clear, particularly about treating others well and helping those in need. Why is it that Christians have devolved to debates over trivia and mercenary crap instead of spending time doing what Jesus recommended? Have they always been this way?

What planet are you from or are you just brain dead ?. I will only mention one Christian organisation that is world wide , Its Called the Salvation Army, They ( just in case you have not heard of them ) run soup kitchens , drug rehab centres and a host of other things as well like hospitals etc and orphanages . Now I only mention one christian organisation because I don`t want to embarrass you by asking you to name just one from your religion that even come close to the things that the Salvation Army does in the name of helping others . Now you mentally challenged moron I await your reply !!!

I blame the government, If governments of the Early Rennaisance and "Dark Ages" wouldn't have proclaimed that the leaders were in their position by "devine right", this crap wouldn't happen. I also blame todays society, as someone up there pointed out, it's become about worship and not teachings. It's the same reason I hate Mel Gibson's "The Passion" people focus on his death, and not the good stuff, like the parables, and other teachings.

Well a lot of people are Hippocrates and lazy and don't want to do what Jesus asked them to do...
I for one, like to help others, no matter when or where I am...
I may not be physically able to do much, or financially able to do much, but I do help when I can in any way I can, and I also give money to those less fortunate on street corners...
I feel like I have it better than them cause I have a home to go to and a husband and food and clothes...
So if I can help someone else I do...
I also go here on Answers and vote and rate others answers just for the enjoyment of making their points go up...
Sometimes I will write to them and tell them I did that and sometimes its just a surprise...
So I can't speak for others, but I like to help if I am able...

It would be nice to help other people, but there are alot of people who don't want help.It could also be because it is so hard to trust people anymore.I am a Christian and I know the Lord will protect me but I would be lying if I said I wouldn't be scared to pick up a hitchhiker for example.I'm not 100% sure if it's fact but In my opinion for every one of us Christians, there are probably just as many followers of satan. If you know of a safe way I can help somebody out,let me know,I'd be glad to help if at all possible.
God Bless.

We do!,
but there is nothing wrong with debate and conversation.
I enjoy debate, but I did before I was a Christian aswell. Not everybody is going to agree with you on everything.
I've always taken part in volunteering, and filling boxes for donations. Its important to help people out.

I do think that its better for a Christian to go out and spend their time getting donations for a homeless shelter than it would be to go protest against gay marrage.

You are generalizing incorrectly. Church groups run soup kitchens, rescue missions, hospitals, food banks, clothing banks. Some buy medicine and even gas for the needy. Rent is paid, utilities kept on, cars repaired--by churchs or their volunteer members--all the time. My own church has a diaper and wipes closet that any needy mother can access.
That doesn't make doctrine insignificant. We are strong on both.

In part we are so busy about both - but there will always be those who demand our attention away from the things we've been called to do, to answer their trickery questions, just as Jesus was - this is why we are instructed to be as wise as serpents and gentle as doves. If Jesus had to face such, why shouldn't we?

Because a Christian is a Cult member. Think about it, they "worship" Christ, very few of them honor his teachings. If you want someone who works to understand the teachings of a wise man, look for the Gnostics, they honor his teachings, not him as a god. And to answer your question, yes, once they adopted the name "christian" things went down hill from there.

Now that's a damn good question!
I've often wondered why the Pope says that we should help our hungry brothers while the Vatican is sitting on a mountain of treasure and not letting go.
