Jesus did descend to Hell, to take captivity captive, and to give gifts to men. Jesus took back the authority (the keys) that Adam gave to Satan in the Garden, when He and Eve Sinned. Jesus gift to men was that they were given the opportunity to hear the Good News of His Death, Resurrection and Ultimate Victory over Sin and Death. Those who had believed and died waiting for the promise of Salvation ascended with Him!

Ephesians 4:7-10
But to each one of us grace was given according to the measure of Christ’s gift. Therefore He says: “ When He ascended on high, He led captivity captive, And gave gifts to men.” (Now this, “He ascended”—what does it mean but that He also first descended into the lower parts of the earth? He who descended is also the One who ascended far above all the heavens, that He might fill all things.)

Matthew 27:50-53
And Jesus cried out again with a loud voice, and yielded up His spirit. Then, behold, the veil of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom; and the earth quaked, and the rocks were split, and the graves were opened; and many bodies of the saints who had fallen asleep were raised; and coming out of the graves after His resurrection, they went into the holy city and appeared to many.

Jesus went down to the lower earthly regions to gather up those that were looking forward to the coming Messiah for their salvation.

This was before Jesus died, and their sins were only covered by the blood of animals.

When Jesus died, He shed His blood for the forgiveness of sins "Once" and for all.

These "Believers" were captive, so to speak, in an area,{Abrahams bosom}, waiting for the day of atonement, to be led away to be with Jesus at the right hand of the father in heaven!

Ephesians 4:8-10
This is why it says:
"When he ascended on high,
he led captives in his train
and gave gifts to men."

(What does "he ascended" mean except that he also descended to the lower, earthly regions?

He who descended is the very one who ascended higher than all the heavens, in order to fill the whole universe.)

Hell Is A Grave Idiot And Jesus Conquered It

Sheol is sometimes translated as hell. It is the abode of the dead. Sheol had two chambers. One is paradise, sometimes called Abraham's bosom. The other is the place of torment.
Paradise is not heaven and the place of torment is not the lake of fire. Jesus went to Sheol but he went to the paradise side. Then he rose from the dead and latter ascended into heaven.

Remember, Scripture says He BECAME our sin (2 Corinthians 5:21). This means He didn't just take them onto Himself, but He became sin. The wages of sin is death. He had to undergo punishment on our behalf.
However, He also plunder Death by resurrecting. In doing so, He brought the OT saints out & took authority over death.

"To get back the keys." What?? O_o What keys?? The keys to his house?? Did God change the locks? What scriptures support this? I swear, people just pull ideas out of their hinder parts...

If the punishment for sin is being sent to hell, and Jesus took our punishment for us, then he should be in hell right now, forever and ever, being punished in our place. That's how it works, right?

He was our substitute. He paid the consiquences to our sins. Before Jesus we were divided from God. Jesus came to die for our sins and go to Hell so that we may be reconciled with God.
