Well, I know this isn't a HUGE AWESOME gift. But it could just be a SIDE gift. I'm currently 14 and I gave my brother this when he graduated from high school and he loved it. And it's a common gift for graduations too. "Oh The Places You'll Go!" by Dr.Suess. It's extremely meaningful.

Get her things for her dorm! A nice lamp, maybe a few organizing kit thing-a-ma-jigs... a flash drive would be a good one -- those things are a little expensive but they are good when you save your work on the computer -- all the new computers have flash drive slips now, no more 3 1/2 floppies...
Maybe a videocamera? I don't know how "out" you want to go for her present, but a videocamera would be nice, so she could record a lot of her memories at college... you could get a her a journal.
Just a few ideas, hope I helped!

A laptop computer complete with external speakers, printer/scanner/copier, dvd-rom, cd burner, latest anti-virus software, microsoft office, microsoft word, tons and tons of memory, a huge stack of cd's and a couple of san disks ect... ya know... all the things that would be useful for a college student. plus, she can take it to class and take notes. Dell has some pretty good deals. A good place to check on a San-disk is Walmart or an electronic place like Circuit City or Best Buy.

I am orignially from NY and Syracuse can be quite the cold place. Since she is going to live in a dorm or other off campus housing, what about furniture? Or the money or gift cert to get it. Or what does he need, not what she wants. Car tune up or help towards buying a car.

Go to Things Remembered and get her an engraved gift- you can get her a nice piece of sterling jewelry or something she can use for college, like a good pen or portfolio. The prices are affordable but the engraving gives it a special meaning. They have stores in almost every mall, and engraving is same day.

You could go traditional and get luggage. But it really depends how much you want to spend on her.
It will be hard for her to travel with a lot of stuff, so you can make it easy on her by finding out if she is living on campus or not.
If she is living on campus, find out what they furnish in the dorm rooms.
Give her gift certificates to get her self a lot of things that will make freshman livng easier on her.
Target
Bed Bath and Beyond
Ikea
.. places like that.
She's going to need a mini-fridge, a microwave or mini hotplate, linen, pillows, a desk.. etc..
Or maybe, you can help her with a Laptop...
I don't know how I can live without mine. It's help me in my classes big time.

I would advise against a car for the first year at least. I did ALOT of drinking my first year in college and someone would have done something dumb and dangerous with a car. Lunch or dinner at a fancy restaurant where you treat her like an adult is a nice gift.

Luggage is a traditional present from parents for graduation. It suggests that they'll be exploring the world soon.

How about a gift card or online gift certificate to amazon.com, ebay.com or other online retailer? This is what I get for my son each year as he finishes elemetary school & achieves the goals we've set up together with his teacher for that year. He loves spending it on something he wants.
