any 99 benz worth 4500.00 either has stupid high miles, or it's been hit. I don't trust any car going for that kind of money when the current market value is over 10000.00

I assume that both cars are sedans and not coupes. If that was the case, I would go for the newer mercedes. A 13-year-old beemer is probably nothing but maintance with how knows how many miles.
Below I have listed Kelly Blue Book values for both the cars you mentioned. According to the mercedes listing below, you'll be hard pressed to find a Mercedes for any less than about $10K. A Mercedes listed at $4500 that's a 1999 is likely a lemon or worse, a salvage.

A friend of mine has a C230 and I don't mind it, but it's pretty uncomfortable and when there's a couple of us in there, it's hard to fit in the back. Maintenance was not very cheap and IMO styling's pretty bland.
I'd rather take the 3 Series even though maintenance is even more expensive, and if you're more than 6'5" it's hard to fit in, but fuel economy is better, it's a lot funner and more comfortable and it looks better in my opinion.

Get the Merc. More reliable car in the long run and that's a steal of a price for one if it's under a 100,000 miles. Good engineering on all styles. It's a car you will have for a very long time if it's taken care of. LOL, I sound like a used car dealer but they are a good vehicles and never go out of style.

Mercedes Benz, because it reminds me of Hotel California by the Eagles.
Sorry I can't be more serious. ;)
