Antihistamines such as diphenhydramine (Benadryl) can help relieve itching caused by hives, but won’t affect itching from other causes. Most antihistamines also make people sleepy, which can help patients sleep who would otherwise be awake from the itch. Specific treatment of itching depends on the underlying condition that causes it. In general, itchy skin should be treated very gently. While scratching may temporarily ease the itch, in the long run scratching just makes it worse. In addition, scratching can lead to an endless cycle of itch—scratch—more itching. To avoid the urge to scratch, a person can apply a cooling or soothing lotion or cold compress when the urge to scratch occurs. Soaps are often irritating to the skin, and can make an itch worse; they should be avoided, or used only when necessary.
Creams or ointments containing cortisone may help control the itch from insect bites, contact dermatitis or eczema. Cortisone cream should not be applied to the face unless a doctor prescribes it. Probably the most common cause of itching is dry skin. There are a number of simple things a person can do to ease the annoying itch:
• don’t wear tight clothes
• avoid synthetic fabrics
• don’t take long baths
• wash the area in lukewarm water with a little baking soda
• for generalized itching, take a lukewarm shower
• try a lukewarm oatmeal (or Aveeno) bath for generalized itching
• apply bath oil or lotion (without added colors or scents) right after bathing
Please check with the doctor before you attempt to take any medicine.

I had poison oak 25 years ago and I scratched so much that I scratched off my belly button. Go to the doctor He will give you a steroid (not anabolic) shot and some medication to stop the itching. I went and he had the itching stopped within the next couple of hours. If you won't go to the doctor you can go to a pharmacy and get some stuff called Ru-gel and that will help a little bit. Your best bet is to go to the doctor.

I went thru this - There's a calamine in a spray can from Bandaide - I used that & cortisone cream. It took about a week
& a half to finally clear up.
Benedryl tabs will help relieve the itching, but might make you
feel sleepy.
When all else fails, call your Dr. Good Luck!

Run hot water over it. Hot enough to be uncomfortable but not so hot that it burns you. I've had alot of experience with poison ivy and it will stop the itching for several hours. Don't do it though on patches that are really tender and swollen or are blistered and weeping. I haven't found an OTC cream that provides even the slightest relief. In fact alot of them seem to make it itch and burn even more.

The best thing i ever used was caladryl and taking a luke warm bath in aveeno you know the oatmeal medication in the packetsI think you get 8 packs in a box.You can also get that caladryl in clear so it dosen't show on your skin.Hope this helps try the caladryl in the day time and the aveeno at night. You may have to use caladryl after your bath if the rash is real bad.

Over the counter remedies include Calamine lotion, hydrocortisone cream or/and benadryl...
No Baths.
Go to doctor to get either cortisone-like injection or prednisone pills.

I have tried all the usual remedies - they don't work.
Buy a product called ZANFEL - it's expensive and hard to find - but it works and is worth every penny.
I often get poison ivy and I keep a tube in the medicine cabinet just in case.

benadryl by mouth and they also make an ointment for itch. but you can also apply straight bleach on it (just a small amount on a cloth that will start to kill the poison ivy) and gets rid of it quicker . good luck!
