Hyundai Tiburon GS, Mini Cooper, Ford Mustang V6, Volkswagen GTI, Dodge Neon SRT-4, Honda Civic Si, Mitsubishi Eclipse GS. Personally, I like either the Mini Cooper or the GTI. The Mini because it can be ordered fully cusomized from the factory. You can choose exactly which options you think you need. The GTI is good because it is fast as hell for a hatchback. It is at the top of your price range, though. But it also retains value almost as much as the Toyota.

I'd look at Chevy first they have 5 models in that range and the bonus is all get at least 30 Mile to the gallon, so they are good on gas.
Second You can't beat the Ford Focus, in the 15-20K you can get one well equiped and they are great on gas, about 25 to the gallon.
Finally dodge Neons are great on gas, and decently equipped at 15-20 k they get good mileage, and as a bonus they have more Engine power so they are faster that the others

For a daily driver, in that price range, the Civic Si has some zip, along with the Neon SRT-4, I think base model Mustangs are $15,000 and have you looked at the Eclipse?

Stick with Honda or Toyota or Nissan and you won't go wrong they have a proven track record for reliability. You can check them out in Consumer Reports reliability records. I have a 1992 Nissan with 206,000 miles on it and it is still on the road, it looks like hell, and needs a paint job, but so far it has been the most reliable car I have ever owned, it has never broken down and stranded me. It even has the original air conditioning and it still blows extremely cold air. My wife and both daughters all have Honda's and they absolutely love them, no complaints and no breakdowns. Highly recommended.

Yeah, the electric ones, unless you make a gazillion a year and can afford the gas prices like they are. Its only going to get worse but if you insist on being gasoline dependent expect to pay through the roof soon! My husband and I are trying to convert our vehicles over to ethanol. Alcohol fuel. We can brew our own with a county permit! That will put a whole new outlook on Bush's Administration!

Spend more than you can afford and get a hybrid super fuel efficient car. You will be glad you did when (not if) fuel prices double again in the near future. You will still be able to move around while others complain.... Mark my words!
