I have a Boston Terrier who sleeps in bed with me. Several months ago I began to get hives at night on my body or legs, usually on my back or chest. I figured that I might be having a reaction to his hair. I wash my sheets and blanket every week in hot water but that doesnt seem to help. I have tried to get him to sleep in his crate again at night but that usually results in him starting to cry at 4am and I loose more sleep than I would have from the hives.

All I've been doing to prevent the hives is sleeping in a shirt and taking an antihistimine. I'm wondering if anyone has any suggestions as to what I can do to prevent these hives from happening. Its a weekly occurance.

Thanks for your help

I forgot to add- I use a hypo allergenic laundry detergent (and since I only get them at night) I doubt its from the detergent. My dog is on Frontline so I doubt it's fleas. I had a dog growing up as a kid and never experienced this.

You could be having a allergic reaction to your dog. It is not the hair but the dander that most dogs let off. Consult your vet about some good shampoo for dander and see if that helps. If not your dog may have some kind of mite and that will also basicly do the same to humans. I have never know of this happening.

Train your dog not to sleep in your bed. He is just going to have to get used to it. Try giving him a shirt that you have worn and put it in the crate with him. The scent of you might soothe him a night. It's like having a baby and not wanting them to get used to sleeping in your bed. They need to know you will not change your mind and give in.

Hives is a serious reaction to something you are allergic too. I would try to train him or give him up.

Oh, I also think maybe you might have bed bugs, if it's not the dog you are allergic to. Plus, it doesn't matter whether you grew up with dogs, people can get allergies later in life too. And maybe you should check with your doctor.

Are you sure that they are from your dog? Do you get them from petting your dog or sitting with your dog? Do you only get them from sleeping next to you dog at night? If you don't get them from normally petting your dog than it may be something else.
Try bathing your dog regularily. Use a hypoalergetic shampoo. Jonsons Baby Shampoo works great and it wont strip your dogs coat of its natural oils.

See a doctor and check the dog out with a vet.

Hives are not caused by your dog. Hives are caused by nerves. What you are most likely seeing are flea bites.
