Actually #2 is not the best the higher the number the better writing quality you get meaning the darker the lead. That is why when taking an exam they ask you to use a 2 or 3 pencil.
A little pencil history for your mind and for future artist maybe:
Some pencil manufacturers use the letter "H" to indicate a hard pencil. Likewise, a pencil maker might use the letter "B" to designate the blackness of the pencil's mark. The letter "F" is also used to indicate that the pencil sharpens to a fine pont.
Pencil makers also use combinations of letters -- a pencil marked "HB" is hard and black; a pencil marked "HH" is very hard, and a pencil marked "HHBBB" is very hard and really, really black!
Being #1 is not always the best. My question to you is "Why are pencils painted yellow?"

the number refers to the hardness of the lead. #2 is slightly harder than a #1, and lasts longer. Also called an HB pencil.

Number ones are really dark- probably messy. And then the higher up the number the lighter the pencil- sixes and sevens are for artists making sketches and stuff. Number twos are good cause they're dark enough for computers to read and sturdy enough for everyday use. I think.
