Running at a steady pace for a period of time is excellent for your heart, and will make it nice and strong, and healthy if you do this consistent.
Speeding up every now and then for a few seconds is of some benefit, but not so much as the endurance running. If you're wanting a healthy and fit heart, just do the endurance running and this will be good enough! Hope this helps some.....

I've read that it's best to vary the heart rate. Intervals of running fast mixed in with intervals of running slower.

Dan is spot on; running in general is good for your heart, and running fast can be great for your heart as long as you don't overdo it. I like to run longer distances slower, and am not too proud to slow to a walk if I realize I've overexerted myself. Know your strengths and be wary of your limits; then go out and enjoy yourself!

Interesting question...in fact the body gets better at meeting the demand for oxygen when you train at higher intensities...think of Lance Armstrong.

But really it depends on your personal goal.

Any elevated level of intensity can have a beneficial effect on resting heart rate, Blood pressure, cholesterol, hormone profiles etc...

No, you need to increase your heart rate to your specific level and sustain it for a certain period of time. fast walking or jogging will do that for you.

Well, is your heart healthy?
Is it about to burst?
If you run too slow you'll be walking.
