I'm also allergic to cats and dogs and a few years ago I moved in with a relative and they had a St. Bernard and I lived with them for 1 year. After living with the dog for about a month I was fine. I would still break out with other animals though. I was gone for a week and a half and when I came back, I again was allergic for a few weeks then I was fine. I don't know if this would be the case for you. You can also ask your doctor for an allergy pill if you don't want to take a shot. Hope this helps, good luck!!

Sorry to say ... those types of allergies are for life.. a mis conception is people out grow them.... it is not true....or there wouldn't be any adults with allergies.
I ended up with fish... (my son has the same allergies as his dad & I ,he named the fish names people name their dogs ??? He's barely 10...)as they don't cause problems....
Some can handle poodles....not us...my aunt can handle them as long as they are not wet....they don't have fur,but hair,so they don't give off the dander fur does,I guess & have been told.
Also I found using Clartian helps sometimes...but benadryl works the best....an inhaler with an astamatic steroid keeps them tolerable...for rashes, hives & ecama.....a cold tar based medicine it the only thing to cure the itchiness, and works very quickly. on ecama....Estar... OTC...(orange tube, expensive ,but worth the money) usually found at the drugstore....you may have to ask the pharmasist for it....as many keep it behind the counter, but no prescription is needed...Sarina helps sometimes too.
I had 4 sets of allergy shots through out my life... they made things worse... the last 2 times I asked about them..the Allergist refused due to a severe allergic reaction when I was being tested for them.... not good....all those I know who didn't have them are ok... the ones who had them are as bad as I am..
Stands to reason... the more you expose yourself to any allergian....the worse your body reacts...
The Allergist make big money giving them... many say a severe reactions after each shot is normal....it is actually VERY dangerous & even deadly.
I have had some very close calls in the last year... 50 mgs. Benadryl every 4 hoursfor 14 days (protiens stay in your system for up to 14 days) & 21 day courses of Predisone...Azmacort inhaler as a preventive...Albuterol as an emergency resuce.... have kept me alive....
FY! : Epipens have a sulfa base.. not wise to use if youhave an allergy to sulfa... I used mine & my heart stopped 2 times,as I am allergic to sulfa.... They last 10 minutes for each injection....
I have dealt with allergies since I was 2 weeks old...(I am 46) I .was experiemented on with all the products out there...many that didn't work....thankfully most aren't used...
Cortisone is only good for a couple of times... then actually can cause the eczama to get worse....
Best of luck with them.... a great site to learn more is About.com... go to the area about allergies.. this dr. is VERY accurate on 90% of what she writes...there is also a forum you can chat with others about allergies there....

well, if you want a dog, then you should wait until your allergies are gone. maybe you shouldn't get near anything you are allergic to until your allergies are gone?
