Yes. Good lovers should be independent, as in not needy, but dependent on each other for the relationship that they are sharing. If you are a single mom, you will need a guy who can give you the space you need to mother your kids, and he has to understand that he can help but he isn't dad. I'm a single dad and have dated several single chics who aren't moms. They really don't get it when I have to be Mr. Dad during the middle of a date. The single moms I've dated get it. Some of this is simply having the experience and maturity to understand the parenting role.

yes,
sometimes people really don't have time to put into a relationship that it deserves.
it's not that they don't care or that they want to find something out and string you along until they do find that something else, sometimes they simply don't have the time and feel it's unfair to the other person involved.
Or perhaps they are smothered and feel that they have no room to breath, maybe they need to be able to go out with hteir friends without being questioned about it, or without the significant other being there EVERY time.
it's not they they are hiding anything, it's just that people need to have their own lives outside of their rrelationhip too.
sometimes it means the person is a jerk, and they are playing you, but not always especially if the person does have a stressful life.

Space, yes. The question is what kind of space and to what degree.
To me giving your significant other 'space' means not fretting if they associate with other non-romantic friends, spend time with family, go shopping by themselves, etc. It might also be not calling them every day or being too pushy. One has to learn what gives them pressue in order to know how to minimize it.

EVERYONE HAS A CERTAIN AMOUNT OF SPACE, ALREADY, THATS WHY WERE CALLED HUMANS, WE TAKE UP SPACE, I THINK ITS A WAY TO START CHIPPING AT THE ICEBERG OF SEPARATION, SOMETIMES PEOPLE NEED TO GO TO EXTREMES TO SEPARATE, DONT EXPECT MUCH FROM HIM GETTING HIS SPACE, IF HE DOESNT COME FOR YOU AFTER HE GETS HIS SPACE, IT WAS REALLY JUST AN EXCUSE,,,,,,,,,,,
