As a bartender in a busy tourist destination I rarely recieve tip from indian or pakistanis. Actually 1 in a 50 to be actual. They see everyone else tipping, and they're obviously are aware of it. Why then can they not part with their change after recieving good service?

I am an INDIAN myself and b4 u get alarmed by the caps tht i took offence, relax. I just dont want u to get away with a wrong notion abt my country.

Tipping in India is certainly not mandatory (i doubt whether it is anywhere else.) It depends frm person-to-person whether he has enuff money to spare to tip or not. Change is certainly valuable for payphones and stuff- u cant stuff a bill down tht slot, can u? and no1 in their right minds would go on a holiday with change for this very purpose as change is difficult to manage.

Moreover, when Indians tip while they r in India, we don't like to tip merely the change. If we really like or appreciate the service, we tip even a Rs. 100-200 bill or even more, depending on the place.

When we tip in foreign nations, we certainly do expect a value for our money - that's one of the things in India tht is ingrained in our culture- GET UR MONEY's or ur WORK's WORTH. Possibly ( i m assuming tht u were in a place out of India when u were talking abt a busy tourist location) when we go abroad, we see the best sites, the best restaurants, the best places for tourists actually. Then we compare and decide what was the best for us. May be the Indians didnt find ur bar/pub satisfying or up to the mark coz they had seen better places. Its just a simple rule of comparison.

We indians also value privacy and quiet when on a holiday. even when Indians drink in a bar, they appreciate privacy. May be ur place lacked it.

We merely believe that money (as in tips) without words is derogatory and words without money are cheap.

We just dont BE a part of a practice coz any1 else is a part of it. And tht applies to every individual on this earth, irrespective of his nation. Generalization is quite unreasonable in this case.

Generally, Indians do not like to part with their money. This is a characteristic that shouldn't be condemned or praised, just accepted. Irish like to drink more than a lot of groups. Moslems never drink. Spanish like to dance. Generalities? Sure. We have to classify in some way to figure out how to act in the world. So Indians don't tip very well despite good service. It is OK--part of the variety in the world.

tipping for a service rendered is never an indian concept
indians are not used to it,
they feel with money paid for a service rendered, say,
for taxi ride or a restaurant bill the matter ends there

i can vouch for this with my 58 years of experience
this is is purely a western culture which was not practised in india
but slowly this concept is picking up
but still majority will not accept tipping
but u know one thing
indians do tip for any favour or service that is reqd from others official or otherwise
it is popularly known as bribe
so no grudges

I don't mean to be rude, but maybe it was your service?Perhaps they have a different standard of service from other cultures? When I was in college, I worked in a diner in a predominantly Indian neighborhood, and they tipped me just fine. Maybe their culture tips waiters, not bartenders? Because, honestly, in my experience, this is not true. I found the cheapest tippers to be white women (and I am a white woman, so this is not prejudice) in a group.

indians and pakistanis? i sense a hint of discrimination in the way you chose to express your growing "CONCERN" on the issue of non-tipping indian tourists who seem to flock your pub. i'am an indian....first and foremost. however i do not represent the rituals and beliefs of the enitre 1 billion countrymen that i am tied to by the virtue of my nationality. im highly disgusted and slightly taken aback at this very unforseen discrimination and segreagation of a particular sect from the rest. did u stop to think before you posted this up that indians are not only the MOST hospitible people you will ever have the fortune to find but they are also just forgiving and UN-BIASED??? you choose to target and accuse indians of belonging to a cheap and low mind-set and having a crotchity menatlity when you havent even considered the possibility of poor maintenance and lack of worthy services being provided at this god-for-saken pub of yours? part with their money huh? are you trying to indicate that you are tipped big time by people of all other countries except india??....i am absolutely convinced that this has nothing to do with the people of a certain country and more to do with the abominable customer service you are rendering. the customer is not satisfied hence he/she shall not reward you for your below-average services. you cannot sue them or charge them guilty of crime. but let me suggest what you can do is GET A NEW JOB....one where you dont have to encounter indians or CHANGE YOUR ATTITUDE TOWARDS PEOPLE FROM ASIA AND THE MIDDLE EAST.why? you might ask did i mention asia and middle east?....because i have a gut feeling that racists like yourself do not spare any one but their own race.....so speaking wherever it is that you belong. im really sorry to hear these views being displayed over the internet as a means of amusement and mockery but i would also like to point out that most of the replies to your query have spoken of your incapability and inadequency. so i shall not further elaborate my point as i think i have made it clear.....INDIANS ALL OVER THE WORLD ROCK! THEY HAVE THE BEST OF EVERYTHING....EDUCATION...FAME AND FORTUNE....SO HERES A BIG TIP FOR YOU PUNK...next time you run into an indian at a bar just say these two words and you'll get a tip....JAI HIND!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

good luck with this.....and trust me you should try it...also dont fret to mention my name if some one asks who taught you this.

Cheap people.

Then again, I don't like/get the idea of a tip. It is your job/profession. You already get paid. Do you tip a banker when you take out money? Do you tip an accountant to do your taxes?

I don't have an answer, but suspect in their culture wait staff are paid enough to live on w/o tips. In the USA they are NOT, Oriental Delight! less than minimum wage.

Why generalize? It's not right to generalize on certain groups of people. There are "cheap" people but I'm sure not all "cheap" people are Indians/Pakistanis.

Back in my waitress days, I was always tipped well by people of Eastern origin. They were also friendly. I found white women to be the absolute worst. (I am a white woman)
