when ever i search for parts it asks is it type 1,2,3,4 ect...

Why not ask Volkswagen USA for all the details they could supply, given the serial number?

I'm sure they would help you - and it will be easier then to find any parts.

The Bus is a type 2, The bug is a Type 1, The Karmann Ghia, Fastback, Squareback, and Notchback are all type 3's, and the 411 and 412 are type 4's, and might I say Congrats on a 1971, got one myself, great year.

It's for a 1972 but the only big change was the motor that yeah and this catalog doesn't say a word about it. Anyways I have a 1971 Kombi(base model/commercial trim) Bus myself still in the project stage.

It is a type 2. type 1 is the beetle, type 3 fastback, type 4 wagon
