For the first week you should only notice faint bleeding, the second week it will be much heavier and you should concider doggy diapers or keeping your dog on a tile floor. Much eaiser to clean up. The last week it will tapper off and be very faint again until it stops. Do not let your dog outside by herself! Male dog when they smell a "*****" in heat are very crafty and can find their way in to the hardest yard to get to her. You will also notice that she will get quite moody.

Like any other female mammal, the heat comes first, then the bleeding after the heat is over. You can get a diaper or belt to keep it off the furniture and carpets.

In most pet stores you can buy a specially made "belt" for a female dog in season. Made of plastic it goes around her back and belly and has a little pocket where you can put in squares of fresh toilet tissue or Kleenex. So your floors and furniture are protected. It does not protect the dog from pregnancy so you do not want to let her out.
