Generally speaking, you have a rotating part (rotor) and a stationary part (stator) which work together to force air into an increasingly smaller space, thus compressing it.

Take a bunch of compressor disks. Attach some compressor blades to them. Alternate those disk/blade assemblies (the rotor) with stator units. Instant compressor.
