That would depend on the particular faith within which the house-blessing took place. The meaning of a house-blessing conducted by a Roman Catholic priest is very different from that of a house-blessing conducted by a Tibetan lama, or that of a Cheyenne spiritual elder, or from that conducted by a Wiccan priestess. All of these religions have such blessings, as do many others. The purpose of the blessing would vary depending on the idea of "blessing" in the liturgy and theology of each faith.
In my own Wiccan faith, it serves a number of potential purposes, based on the expressed and implicit emotional and spiritual needs of those whose house it was. Here are some common examples:
(1) the purpose is to celebrate the joyous occasion of getting a new house that you hope to make a home for your family;
(2) the purpose is to express your gratitude to the Universe for the home and re-commit yourself to make a place in your home (and therefore in your life) for your spiritual practice;
(3) it allows other members of your community, your families of blood, choice, and spirit, to use ritual to share in your family's joy.
Other reasons, too, for sure.
For other faiths, it will be other things as well.
