You have turned on the overwrite feature, where you write over what you type. To turn this feature off, press "Insert" on your keyboard (found next to Backspace)

Check Word at the bottom, is the word OVR visible?
You accidentally hit the INSERT key on your keyboard. Hit it again and it should stop typing over existing text in your document.

You have an insert button on the right side of the keyboard. Hit it once and it will go to insert rather than overwrite

Look below at the status bar. If you see an "OVR" it means your overwrite mode is switched on. You can turn it off by double-clicking on it or by pressing the "Insert" key to toggle it off.

Try pushing the INSERT button on your keyboard. It sounds like you went into replace mode rather than INSERT mode.
This can indeed be very annoying....

I am pretty good in Word, but I really don't have an idea what your talking about. Maybe you have your Overtype turned on. You can go into Word Help and ask.

There is a button on your keyboard (probably top right) that says "insert". If you hit that button, it should fix the problem.

I think your insert key is on. Hit insert again and that should solve your problem.

That's because your pressing Tab and it screws up that way. or by pressing insert does the same.
