hwright83's technique with the salt and the stones is really excellent. Along with that you might want to also try hanging decorative glass balls in your house to trap evil spirits, burn sage to cleanse the house. After the house is cleansed, mark all the doorways with some sort of protection oil (consult your local metaphysical shoppe). Singing bowls are also excellent for cleansing. They don't rid your space of paranormal, but they do attract a better class of paranormal.
If there's an embedded ghost that's just icky and wont go away, it probably needs help. First you need to locate the ghost. Next focus every bit of spirituality you can toward the ghost. Use a ring of candles, spiritual icons, idols, the bible, every spiritual thing you've got, focus it on the ghost. It is very important that your intent be to help the thing, not banishment. Banishment is negative, and your entire focus has to be positive. You are bringing all these spiritual things to strengthen it so it has the power to move on. You are empowering it. Have a dialogue with it, even if it feels like your only talking to your own internal dialogue, that's okay, and probably close enough to keep the conversation going. Obviously it feels like it needs something, so be supportive and sit with it. This is going to take several hours. It's got a lot to work through to get to the point where it is complete enough to no longer remain bound, so it's going to take time. It's going to want to connect to you because you're helping it and there's an emotional connection on its part, but you're not there for an emotional connection. You're like a councilor helping a client. You care, but you're not making a new friend. When it feels like it's ready, then you burn the sage, and cleanse your house and allow it to be free and move on, and feel happy for it that it's able to move on.
As for how I protect my home, I don't really need to. I have the most wonderful household spirits and I love them very much.

Sprinkle sea salt around the outside of the home while picturing your house surrounded in the white light of the Holy Spirit. Also, cut an onion in half and place both halves cut side up on your kitchen win ow pane (inside). Leave there until it's dry. One last thing: Go to the beach or to a craft store and get some white stones. Pile them in the main corner of your house. I know it sounds crazy but I have had problems with ghosts before. This works! The salt especially. Trust me when I say ghosts do not care about crucifixes.

Anoint your home with Holy oil and pray. If that don't work then look for a new residence. Sometimes they won't leave. It depends on your location. Some homes have been built on old grave yards that has lost their markers etc. There is a such thing as a ghost..........the Holy Ghost!!

"hwright83" has a point about the salt, although what that does is more to kill incoming bugs. It works tho!
Try this instead: Walk around the house with a Bible in your hand and read from it, preferably the exact words of Jesus (they're in red) and continue doing this until the ghosts are gone.

I've had some luck with common household goat's blood sprinkled liberally across each threshold. Also, try nailing a dead cat to the outside of each door into your home. And for the windows, I recommend spray-painting a large crucifix on each one.
These tips, along with reciting the Lord's Prayer backward each night before bed should keep those nasty ole spooks and specters away!

I really don't think you should protect your home from ghosts because they cause no harm.. You just have to believe and you will never be afraid.

Live a clean decent life. Besides, ghosts as we normally think of them do not exist; bad spirits maybe, but not ghosts like Casper.

Don't believe those people who are just teasing you. To keep your home free from ghosts, you must NEVER allow any kind of organic matter in it, alive or dead--none whatsoever! That includes ANY kind of plant matter (for example, flowers, fruits, vegetables, natural fabrics, any type of wood) or animal matter (meats, leather, humans, pets), or any kind of edible matter (food, beverages except water--water is OK) as well. Good luck!

Just tell them its your house, that you worked very hard to own it and that you won't be scared out. Tell them they are ghosts and that they should move toward the light.
