In some cases, it helps reduce school and gang-related violence. When students wear uniforms, they are essentially equal in terms of clothing. Therefore, there are no fights over designer shoes and what not. Also, certain gangs represent their membership by wearing a specific color or item of clothing. Uniforms oust any symbols of gang membership. Plus, students do not have to think about what to wear in the morning.
On the flip side, uniforms do limit a student's freedom of expression. Therefore, uniforms should really only be used as a last resort.

It forces students to choose their peers based on personalities rather than appearances. It takes the pressure off of students of low economic households to fit in. It allows for an environment of equality and yet leaves room for creativity. And the mind numbing, self destroying nitpicking stops. I know, I'm a teacher. I see it everyday.
