You should read a good history of Scientology by L. Ron Hubbard, a great science fiction writer, who started a religion to avoid prosecution.

Based on past history, it is most helpful if someone is the head of state and has the power to execute or imprison anyone who refuses to adopt the religion.

Most religions invented by individuals without that power soon lose their appeal, but there are exceptions if you consider cults (baptist, methodist, lutheran, church of christ, etc.) withing a cult (Christianity) to be a religion.

find empty people with nothing in their lives, perfably lot's of money =P and find a way to fill that void that gives you full control over them.
