Small breeds usually go into "heat" younger than large breeds, the reproductive cycle of the female K-9 (the actual technical term is no permited to be used) is divided in 4 stages:
Proestrus:
It´s duration is aprox. 9 days, a bloody discharge is seen, as well as the swelling of the external genitalia, at this time she will not allow the male to mount her.
Estrus:
Duration aprox 9 days. This is the phase when ovulation ocurrs, usually within the first 48 hrs, however, this depends on the individual, we have what we call, early ovulators and late ovulators. This is when the female K-9 will be receptive to the male and fertilization can take place. This is also the time that artificial insemination is performed.
Diestrus:
This stage lasts from 60 to 90 days. this is when we find the highest levels of progesteron, whether or not she is pregnant.
Anestrus
This stage has a duration of 3 to 4 months, there is no sexual activity at this time.
Chihuahua dogs have small litters, usually no more than 4 pups.
But it is imperative that you skip the first and sometimes even the 2 heat, to allow her to mature emotionally and physically.
Also it is very important that you speak with your vet to set up vaccination and deworming calanders, change of food requierments, etc. The better the health of the mother the healthier the babies.
Chihuahua puppies are usually sold before they are born, (a friend of mine is a breeder she has a 4 year waiting list) ,a lot of people like them because they make excellent apartment and small area dwellers.
They are not recomended for small children for they lack the patients, not like labs, collies or boxers that the more the kids play the happier. Chuhuahuas can be grumpy, snappy and they bite when they don´t want to be bothered. But all the same they are lovable, and make good companions for adults and older children, teenagers in particular seem to do extremly well together.
If you don´t want her as a breeder, then I would suggest spaying her, ask your vet as to the age he/she feels is best for YOUR puppy, spaying helps some problems but can cause others.
This has to do with the physical and emotional maturity, you want to make sure that all is going well before the surgery, yes, it´s routine, but your dog may not. There is always a risk. Your vet can instruct you to the best choice and time.
Hope this helps.

A few days to a week. My best advice is to get her spayed. This will control her hormones and make her much calmer during her heat. This will also help prevent an unwanted large litter of puppies. Help control the pet population! Spaying is a routine procedure that is generally very reasonably priced.

It usually lasts about two weeks, sometimes longer or shorter. But on a serious note, if you are not experienced with this breed you should get her spayed. Chihuahuas are one of the top five breeds who have labor difficulties, sometimes they even need c-sections. It isn't worth putting your dog through this for something that you want. There are too many homeless dogs already on this planet, don't add to the problem please!

The term "heat" refers to the estrus cycle of the dog/cat. Female dogs will go into estrus usually twice a year, about six to nine months apart. The cycle lasts about three weeks, during which time they will bleed. The dogs are only fertile for about 3-5 days during the middle of the cycle.

the average lenght of a heat cycle is about three weeks, (21 days). but can be shorter or longer. asume the longer period if you have doubts. the also have a cycle about every six months or so, but it can be longer or shorter. when the dog exits her heat cycle, i recomend getting her spayed. unless youplan to breed her, then its your choice, its your dog, do what you want with it. the dog might have more than one cycle per year, if the timing is right, its nothing to worry about. the reason for waiting till after she is done with her cycle is so it is less of a mess for your vet to clean up. if you plan to get her spayed, keep a close eye on her untill her cycle is up, my dog runs off when she was in heat, i was waiting for the cycle to end so i could get her spayed. i hope this helps, best wishes.

You really should spay your Chi. Not only does this eliminate the resonably high risk of ovarian cancer, but it helps reduce the unwanted pet population, will prevent the inevitable pack of male strays at your door, and will eliminate the bloody mess.

Dogs can be in eustrus from one to three weeks. If you are worried about it get some doggie diapers and put them on her to help contain the mess if she isnt one to clean up after herself. Then PLEASE get her spayed.
