My boyfriend is the sweetest guy i know but i think he has a problem. he is about 5ft 5in but he only weighs 92 pounds. you can see every bone in his body. i think he might be skipping meals but he eats when he is around me. he is very athletic but i dont think thats the reason for his weight. how can i be sure that my boyfriend is anorexic and if he is what should i do. i care A LOT about him so breaking up with him isnt an option. i worry that he is not eating enough and is working out to hard! what should i do??

A few years ago I was able to eat absolutely everything and not gain weight. I would eat 4000 + calories a day and continued to lose weight. The issue was a stress disorder and my system was not processing all the food I ate. I visited a doctor, got my mineral balance back in check, and took mega dose liquid vitamins for about 6 months. The weight gain started within the first few weeks and continued until I was a more normal size 8. (I was down to size 2). A visit to a doctor or naturopath may be wise.

I have raised a son that has always eaten like a pig and yet was as skinny as a rail. I was told most of his life that boys are like that. He played soccer all year round, and often we ran into trouble because he had no stores of body fat to burn, so he often was burning muscle for energy. I tried everything, altering his diet, weight gain shakes in between meals, I even made him eat a huge bowl of ice cream every night before bed. I still had a child that was all skin and bone and often risking his health and well being. He was definitely not anorexic, as he ate constantly. His metabolism was just set very high, and then the athletics didn't help. All I can say is, when he finally stopped moving, he gained weight. He will probably always be considered lean, but he has some body fat now. And my conclusion, after watching him all those years, is boys are just like that. Of course there are exceptions to the rule, but boys do seem to be scrawny longer than girls.

Boys can get anorexia, but it is rare. It tends to be a female disorder. You have to remember that many eating disorders stem from a mental condition, usually centered around self esteem. It is not often that men see themselves as fat and unable to fit into the latest fashion.

Well if he eats around you he's NOT anorexic, because anorexic people don't eat anything. He could just have a weird disorder, if he does eat and doesent gain anything he could just have some weird problem. There was a guy on the news who only wieghed 90 pounds because he could eat anything and not gain an ounce! I'd say to ask him to eat more and stop working out so hard, you never no what could happen.

Hey,

That's a real serious matter. Try to talk with him get him to open up about. But don't jump the gun and stick it to him saying "are you anorexic?" Make small talk about it . You seem as though you love him and wish all the best for him. The only option is to be open and honest. Also if he doesn't feel like talking about it. That's okay just give him time and support him .. be the shoulder to lean on and let him know your there for him .. good luck and look to the sky !

His Body Mass Index is probably very far into the "low" category...what I am saying is that a (teenage) male who is 5'5" should weigh at the very least....120 lbs. Since you care so much, without accusing him of having an eating disorder....take him to a therapist where you might discuss your concern about his general health.

A good therapist will talk about your relationship, and should lead into some discussion. He needs to be told by a professional that he is dangerously underweight. Keep it "clinical" and not "personal" at the beginning.

well, i have a 15 year old athletic friend who is that exact height and weight, so i'd have to know your boyfriend's age to be able to tell you if that was serioulsy abnormal....but you should just tell him that you are concerned about him and ask for some kind of explanation...you might also talk to his family about it (like if he has older siblings, and probably his parents too). if it turns out to be a falso alarm, it's still better safe than sorry.

Talk to him first, avoiding interrogate him. Also follow him one day in all his activities. If he is anorexic, talk to him again but be straight about the issue, always recall him that you love him and care a lot.

I think you should talk to him. Ask him why he is doing those things to himself. Then take him to McDonalds. Show him that keeping fit doesn't mean being skinny.
