The Biblical answer is "to show yourself approved of God," but IMHO this applies to study in general and not JUST to the Bible, as some have alledged. Any "christian" who rejects knowledge and wisdom and refuses to study anything but the Bible is doing the spiritual equivalent of burying their head in the sand.

It is important to study Gods word because it gives us insight with regards to his personality ,his likes and dislikes and by learning more about him we would be able to draw close to him ( James 4:8) and gain a loving relationship with him.
