It is my understanding that most manufacturers changed from R12 to R134 around '95 or '96, but I cannot tell from the owner's manual which type it uses.

It uses R-134-Standard in all 1994 and newer vehicles, its the law R-12 is currently being phased out in 28 nations, it goes up $2.84 a pound till its gone , but news has it the biggest thing smuggled out of Mexico is R-12 tho we no longer use it and it is still sold but a 30lb container this is the only size it comes in is over $1000.00 for 30lb so they are making so expensive so it not worth fixing your older vehicle and is cheaper to convert it, p/s you don't need a license to by the freon you need, but you need a license to buy any other type of freon& freon is clear if there is a color it the oil or somekind of leak stuff, also coolent goes in the raidaitor and refergerant goes in the a/c systen there different names

Look at the service ports. If they're 1/4" flared connectors, it's R-12. If they're larger, snap-on connectors, it's R-134a; it was either supplied that way or was converted.

R-12 systems use the same size service ports on both the high and low side. R-134a systems have different size ports for high and low side for safety reasons.
