Not only on a plane, but buses also. 4 hour bus ride and the only seat available was next to a very overweight woman. Good thing I'm under 100 lbs. because I only got to use 1/2 of my seat. Couldn't put the armrest down as a divider because she took up her seat and 1/2 of mine. And to add insult to injury she fell asleep with her head on my shoulder. I at least put a stop to that.

Yes. Many, if not most, airlines charge morbidly obese people for two seats.

If you've ever been seated next to someone like this on an airline that didn't charge them for two seats you'll understand the reason.

I travel extensively and have had this happen a few times. The worst was a woman who must have weighed 450 - 500 pounds. She was enormous and crushed me as she tried to fit into the seat. It took her over 5 minutes to squeeze herself into the seat.

To add insult to injury (very real, I had bruises on my right hip and thigh for several weeks) she had taken a bath in cheap perfume that made me physically ill. Shortly after takeoff I had to get up and go to the bathroom to throw up. She acted as if I were an axe murder when I told her I needed to go to the bathroom.

I complained to the cabin staff and got a free flight out of it; they said that she should have been charged for at least two seats, and should have been denied boarding due to the odor. The flight was full and I had to stay in the galley for the duration of the flight; about 2 hours.

This is not discrimination based on a non-merit factor. Morbidly obese people simply need more space for everyone's comfort. Very few of them are that way due to a medical reason beyond their control; they choose to be that way and shold pay for the priviledge. And for the few that do have a medical cause, it's just too bad. Life isn't fair.

I think the new rules, are about as fare as it's going to get.

If the person's body requires the space of 2 seats, the need to be issued 2 seats.

Airlines are in businesses to make money, they need to sell every possible seat. If the plane is full, the person needs to pay for the extra seat. However if there is even one empty seat, there should be no charge.

What I would like to see, for the airlines to run their database, and offer a list of flights that are not normally full. For these flights the person wouldn't have to pay in advance and wait for a refund.

Well.....this coming from someone who once was super morbidly obese at 449 lbs. NO.....I was overweight for most of my life. And then at the age of thirty(11 years ago) I had gastric-bypass surgery and lost 253 lbs. I will always be sympathetic to those whom are over weight more than the narrow minded people whom look down on them. So....when you are out in public and think about commenting on someone over weight look who is around you and think before you speak.

Do skinny people get half price? I'm pretty sure that one person should only have to pay for one persons seat.

If you can fit in one seat then one ticket.

If you take 2 seat then 2 ticket price.
