My dog was playing with his brother and a friends dog and I noticed he had started to bleed on his tongue. He bit the side of his tongue and a large bubble formed and blood started to spray out. How can I monitor his condition and make sure no infection developes. I am checking his temperature and keeping him calm for now. He has not eaten anything since he hurt himself. Not sure now what to look for and care for his tongue. Can anyone help me. I called the vet and they said just monitor him keep him calm but no way to apply pressure on the tongue. All my life I've had dogs and never encountered this situation.

not knowing how much you dog has actually bled out, the only thing I can tell you is if there are any vets where you live even other than your regular vet who have emergency phone numbers, if your dog starts seeming to get weak or his gums start getting pale, this means he's getting to the point of hemorrhage & this is life threatening.....you must get him in to a vet that takes emergencies....It baffles me why they told you not to apply pressure....in vet/human medicine, this is the standard method for stopping bleeding....I willl tell you that you can allay the chance of infection by either taking a baby ear syringe full of saline or hydrogen peroxide & squirting it in there periodically...neither is harmful if swallowed in a small amount ....best of luck, sweety....I love my Zoe so much and can imagine the worry you are going through.♥

Oh poor Baby! I have heard that you can pack a wound on a pet with flour and it will stop the bleeding. Allot of times something like that will quit on its own, your Vet is right to monitor him. If you feel he is not better by morning call your Vet back. Good Luck

Do what the vet tell you and but keep his fluid up. Try getting some antibiotics from the vet that well him him fight any infection that would occur when he is healing his wound. But the dog mouth is very clean not like cats. I would take him to the vet and get some antibiotics ok.

Just keep him isolated with water until you can get to the vet tomorrow. The tongue is a huge muscle and takes time to heal. I would ask the vet to cauterize it or put in a stitch in the morning.
Good luck!

your vet is right the bleeding will stop on its own and if it bad enough to not then your dog may need stiches. another thing to monitor is the color of his gums, make sure they are nice and pink and when you put pressure on them and release the color should come back in less than 2 seconds.

Keep ice in his drinking water to help ease the pain and help clot the blood. In a day or so, it will pass and he will be eating and playing as usual.
