Ive heard it has to be 6 consecutive months.

actually the regs have changed, I believe that it is only 30 consecutive days for Army personnel to recieve a combat patch, and one firefight that has rounds flying both directions for a Combat Action, or Combat Infantry Badge

A combat stripe is awarded for either six months in combat or one full campaign.
