Sri is a mark of respect and in a race to proclaim a bigger respect for ones Guru smart people have used it to quantify thier respect. Its like mathematics that u keep adding more 'sri' to show more respect. I think that the real respect one can give to his/her Guru is by following a spiritually awekened path and it really doesnt make any difference to an enlightened person whether you call them by their first name or add up 20 words of respect ahead of the name. The best is Sri , holy, ji , saheb, aadiguru etc are all a symbol of ego- not for the ego of the enligtened person but the frail ego of the followers.

Another reason is that some names require "Sri" to be prefixed to make the original name complete based on the number of letters (akshar) (according to Sanskrit) in the original name to be the religiously accepted name (like an official name); prefix another "Sri" to add respect which makes addressing that name to have "Sri Sri" as prefix.
