me and a friend are what we call open-minded skeptics. Sure, supernatural things may happen, but can I see it? We mess around with the friggin Ouija boards every once in a while. we have stories, but we didn't think they were true because we don't believe the company were with. Maybe six months or less ago we finally got something when it was just the two of us in a room in a actually creepy house. Before this, we never got it to work, at least believably when it was just us too. but than we spoke with someone who was supposedly talking to us one of the first times we did it. we just didn't believe that first time. this wasn't our minds though, because we usually keep our fingures 3 inches from the plachette. in other words, we both saw it move by itself. since than we haven't been able to get it to work. because of our skeptic nature, we usually do it that way, but i was told you need your hands on it too work, that one time, we definetly didn't. were we doing it right?

*laughs* Some of these answers are great! People tend to be afraid of what they don't understand, but it doesn't have to be so. I admire you for giving it a chance and for keeping an open mind. ^_^
Everybody else in this thread will probably think I'm crazy or a cloven-hooved devil, but my best friend and I share a Ouija board and have had it for about 15 years now (I also have a newer one, but it doesn't wark as well, too small). We aquired it as a gift, purchased from a swap meet when we were in 8th or 9th grade. It's a 1970's Parker Bros model, but we've gotten a lot of great stuff from it, just she and I. It seems to work better with a couple extra people though. This is where it gets tricky though because, being skeptics and all, you must be able to trust the other people to not falsify the experience. We get the best results resting 2 fingers lightly on the planchette (index and middle), with more people, take it down to a finger each. And be patient. We've had a lot of luck with stuff picking up quickly, but sometimes we get nothing at all, sometimes just gibberish. You may also encounter a much stronger presence from time to time and sometimes they can be a little scary (one came built-in to our old board, hates my best friend), but just tell them nicely to go away, usually they will. The only physical act I've been witness to so far was the planchette flying off the board at my best friend, but that was 10 years ago or so. If you believe yourself strong enough to not be harmed, then you will not be harmed. If you are feeling vulnerable or upset, stay off, you'll just get bad responses anyway. Have fun! :)

Here's my impersonation of the "wiccan/occultic" answer...
As the Spirits are part of the collective unconscious..try not to be conscious while operating the board.
If the planchette misbehaves follow these rules~
gently smack the planchette on a firm surface
quickly draw the planchette (if glass) over a candleflame
sprinkle the planchette and board with sea salt
smudge the board/planchette with some sage
sprinkle the board with some lavender
roll the board up and light it on fire and deep fry the planchette in pure wesson oil.
Reset the board by
Gently rubbing with a soft cloth
Setting some flowers or bathing the board with candle light
Sprinkling with talcum powder and putting a clean cloth diaper on it. Singing to it will help too...
If spirits ask you to do weird things such as kill a live chicken, bath yourself in peanut oil and slide down the banister of your house, or to stick your wet finger in an open light socket- stop using the board for that session. Anything negative being written on the board means you must put the board away for that session whether you want to or not. The entity should leave by your next session - which can be that day or some time later or maybe never. If this is the case you should just pack up and move and sell your house.
Have a cross word dictionary handy and also a speak and spell, a word jumble sorter and/or some scrabble letters. Some spirits have trouble spelling words or creating sentences so you must interpret what they are saying...for instance...should the board spell something obsure like : HBICNUV..it would then be up to you to add all the pertinant missing letters..after several hours of this if you have not given up..you should easily create either an entirely new word to look up in an Foreign language encyclopedia or something like this "HEY BOY, I CAN NOT UNDERSTAND VULTURES!" See how well it works. After all, contacting the dead (ptthtttububbbth!) is not an exact Seance...Hahaha...get it...probably not! Love in Christ, ~J~ <>< P.S. if your ouija partner should start peeing theirselves, puking green stuff and speaking foul words in a foriegn language..DO NOT consult a Catholic priest..they are notoriously bad at excersisms..er..however ya spell it...so get yerself in touch with a bible thumping evangelical baptist preacher with a bad comb over and a deep southern accent...demons will flee instantly and beg to be sent to the pit. Okay..have yourself a good one.

The Ouija Board can be very tricky and dangerous to use. First of all, if the O.B. is moving by it's self than it's answering a question in your mind that you two put out, or said out loud. Also the O.B. can be posessed by a Demon or a Spirit of some sorts. If that should be the case than most liking you two are in serious trouble. The O.B. is not likely to be used for games or skeptics like yourselfs. Please be careful of what may come in the near future and don't try to figure out the Supernatural Forces unless you are apart of them or one with them. If things get out of hand with the O.B. and it's disrupting your lives in any way possible then burn it and call a priest for help...

A great site to read about the history of the Ouija board and other forms of spirit communication is the Museum of Talking Boards. There's also links to hand crafted boards, online fortune telling boards and tips on how to use the boards. I've placed the link below.

I love the supernatural and things that go bump in the night but you are messing with something wicked in my opinion.
You can open the door for any demon to come into your home.Since all good spirits go to heaven and bad ones to hell, that leaves demons.Nothing you want to mess with.

Ouija boards are bait used by demons. Stay away from it. It is indeed very dangerous to use one of them. I am speaking from personal experience.

Turn it over and use it as a cutting board. Use it to squash snakes. Turn it into wood shavings for your yard. Use it to beat yourself upside the head. Just don't use it to talk to spirits. They aren't who or what you think. Yes it is real.

You are supposed to put your knees together (touching each other's knees) and put your fingertips on the planchette very lightly.
It's just a game and if the planchette is moving on its on, please videotape it and send it to your nearest media outlet because that will be international news.
