I am very skeptical about this "summer" everyone is talking about. Sure its hot, and sunny, June, and the pool is open where i live, but thats not what summer means to me. Wheres all the fires due to dry brush? I dont see an orange sky and i dont smell smoke...

I guess my question is... Is it really summer or what?

P.S. I live in Southern California!

Astronomical Summer begins when the sun is over the Tropic of Cancer which would be around June 20/22. Meteorological summer would be when the average daily temperature is consistently above 75 degrees

Well my friend if the pool is open and there is always a sun in the morning it means that the summer is here. Hey if ur not really sure about it then ask the weather reporter to see if is summer. They will tell u the true.

no it is really winter at my house

and yes, by definition 1 june is the start of summer/winter depending on where you live, the seasons change at the 1st day of every third month.

Oh and to the other answers, the 22 June is the solstice, the shortest/longest day of the year for each hemisphere. It does not mark the changing of seasons.

I'll let you know as soon as we have our first "ozone action day". Then it's officially summer. I live in Michigan and we already a few 90 degree days in May which is fairly unusual. On the other hand, it only got to 70 today. Heck, it could snow tomorrow for all I know. You can't trust those weather guessers!

Actually, it's spring for the northern hemisphere.
For me, here in Argentina, is actually fall.
Shocking, huh?
Summer for you, and winter for me, don't begin until June 21.

Here's info about summer and what causes seasons and when do they exactly begin, if you are really that curious:
