We have found a food that helps with these problems for our cat. But we can't find what we need for our dogs. We have a Boxer and an American Staffordshire Terier, each over 50lbs and lean and active. They prefer dry food. "doggy breath" we reduced by cutting out all table scraps. But "dog sweat" and shedding are still problems. I've heard there are foods that can help with both of these. I don't know what they are or where to get them. Of course, with the amount big dogs eat affordability is a must.

Quality and affordable don't always go together. The really good foods cost more. However since they are nutritious food, not full of fillers like corn and wheat that can cause allergies, you feed a little less of it. The best brands out there include: California Natural, Soild Gold, Innova, Wellness and Merrick. These brands do not contain by products either. By products are anything on an animal that is not fit for human consumption, including cancerous tissue. Also, their first ingredient is meat.

A dog will eat less of a high quality food, simply because the food will offer more nutrition than a low end food. Look for a food that has meat or fish as the first ingredient and some type of carbohydrate as the second. Avoid any food that uses meat by-products, corn, meals, or other fillers that are inexpensive for the dog food company but are not nutritious for your dog. There are several excellent foods out there. Wellness, Natural Balance, Innova, Evo, Solid Gold to name a few. I feed Natural Balance Venison & Brown Rice. I have a 75 pound dog & buy one 17 pound bag of food every 4 or 5 weeks. If you put cost as the primary factor, you are not being fair to your dogs.

It's got to be what you're feeding them. I've had 3 rough collies and 7 shelties and all of them smell like fresh air. It's one of the things I liked the best about my collies. You can bury your nose in them and think you're outside on a spring day. My shelties get bathed once a month and the collies only about 3 times a year. I would be concerned and talk to the vet. Non doggie people can't believe I have all these dogs and the house doesn't smell like dirty dogs.

look for foods that have essentail fatty acids in them or buy some EFA capsules from your vet. you want omega 3 or 6 which are commonly found in fish products. regular brushing and rubbing them down with a damp towel will also get rid of excess danruff and hair and help spread the oils naturally produced through the coat.
