Because they're unaware of just how delicious it is! My boyfriend is American and ever since he had British fish and chips, he puts vinegar on his "fries" whenever he can. We're also spreading the word in the US, and everyone else who's tried it so far loves it. There are a few places in the US (like Boardwalk Fries) that serve fries with vinegar.

This isn't really an answer - just a gripe about chippies who put the salt on first. The vinegar should go on first so that the salt will stick to the chips instead of landing at the bottom!

because it's traditional to have salt & vinegar on chips in UK, but not necessarily in other countries. I do like them with mayo too though
(Btw if you really want to wind up the likes of the ignorant Steve-o, call them French fries. I hear the Americans have banned the word 'French' because the French didn't agree with the invasion of Iraq. Petty or what?)

Actually, im from the U.S and many people do it, but its more of a carnival sorta thing. Ketchup is just easier and already has the vinegar in it, were lazy, its that simple :-) When people go to Al's French Fries (Chain diner) many people eat them with vinegar, but id say the reason why many people don't, is because you have to eat them really fast or else they go soggy, and thats just nasty.

we do in ireland. there's actually a reason why its done, the acid in the vinegar helps break down the fat from the chips, so go ahead and eat more chips the more vinegar the better! now i'm hungry.

Because they aren't so adventurous! I know you can get salt and vinegar crisps but I never heard of actually putting vinegar on them(well I did it but thought I was the only one)

Canada here....vinegar and salt is awesome on fries, but gravy is even better! Usually when we travel in the U.S. and ask for gravy for our fries, they look at us like we sprouted two heads! (I am proud to say I have converted a few Americans now)
