All military personnel regardless of thier job, have strict rules to live by. It's called the UCMJ, (Uniform Code of Military Justice).

no smoking, drinking and believe that they are not allowed to curse either. As long as they abide by these edicts they can wear the old guard patch.

while there are stringent requirements, they are not at restrictive as popular myth would have you believe, and the Army does not regulate their lives while off duty.
