I adopted him from a shelter in March 2005. He is around 8. He never cleaned himself since I've had him. He is such a good boy, he never begs or scratches furniture. He just wont clean himself. His fur gets all matted and then I have to take him to the groomer.

Maybe he's sick.
You should ask your vet.

i dunno, but my cat is 4 and does the same thing, won't clean himself, some say that maybe as a kitten he was taken away from his mother too soon and doesn't know how, i got another cat and she cleans him all the time plus we give him baths every month!!! you need to people and hold the paws and claws back, try brushing him when you see it getting matted and if he has long hair have the groomer shave him bald.

Usually they stop grooming if they're ill. You need to take him to the vet if he's been doing this a long time, even a week or two. The second reason is that he was taken away much too young from his mother, who they learn to groom from. He should see the vet and you probably will need to learn to groom him, too. Good luck.

My cat doesn't know how to clean her eyes or face area very well. But I believe she was taken from her mother too early. My cat is now almost 13 years old. She will clean her body but not her eyes. So for the pass13 years that is my job. Another way for us to bond even closer.

If he's been this way since you got him it could be because he was taken away from his mother to soon. Kittens who are taken away too early often miss out on the important things the mother would teach them. If it is something he has just started, it could be something medical and he probably needs to see a vet.

maybe you should get him checked out by the vet. he seems kind of lethargic, since you said he doesn't scratch furniture and stuff like that. if he is an outdoor cat, he could have gottenn into a cat fight and had an unseen scratch that is still trying to heal.

I don't know why but if you gave him a good brushing every day or two he wouldn't get matted.

sometime over weight cats cat groom themselves properly and if they are in pain then they won't groom themselves. it probably is that his mom cat never taught him so he doesn't know. but regular brushing should help, it will probably make him feel better too. i know that when sick cats don't groom themselves they seem to perk up after being brushed and looked after

it could have something to do with what his life was like as a kitten. if he was detached from his mother prematurely, he may have never learned how to clean himself. my parents' cat is like that. she was abandoned way too early by her mother, before she was weaned.

Why are you asking us??? We aren't experts oh.. wait I am.
Well your cat could think that licking himself clean is not very clean for his tounge or just so you know not all cats lick themselves clean.
