The first step is to check the battery. Take it out and bring it to an auto parts store to test it. I am pretty sure Auto Zone does it for free. If your battery has dead cells, no amount of jump starting will get it to work. If the battery will accept a charge, but is so drained it won't start the car, it's either your alternator or a short somewhere in your electrical system. Pray for the alternator at that stage, becuse an electrical short could be next to impossible to find. Alternators can be tested by most shops. If you're feeling adventurous, go to a Radio Shack and buy a multimeter for around 40 bucks. You can test the voltage across the battery posts, or see how many amps the alternator is putting out before you have to remove anything from the car and haul it down to an auto parts store.
The next step is to have someone listen under the hood while you turn the key to the on position (the position just before starting) and then back to off. The starter solenoid should make a "click", then "clunk" noise to let you know it's working properly. That is the sound of the solenoid engaging and disengaging while getting ready to start the car. Again, you can usually take the entire starter out and have it tested at most auto parts stores for little or no charge.

Battery, starter motor, or alternator... I'd also check all electrical connections, ignition wires, etc. My car is only '01 and it already has cracks in a lot of wiring, something could be shorting, or getting grounded that's not supposed to...

Probably the battery. See if the headlights work at all. If they do then the battery is mostly ok. You could get a voltmeter to check it. Maybe get that Idiots Guide to Volkswagon Repair, it is fun reading anyway.

piston trouble... maybe you are having trouble with the spark plug. Check your battery... that's usually the case.
