If you can practise with mail that isn't important, I would try to de-sensitise him by posting mail thru' the door and enforcing "no" when he tries to bite it, with plenty of praise when he stops trying to approach the mail coming thru' the letterbox. It's pointless trying to hurt him or hit him for it because he won't understand why he's getting hit, even if you do. Perhaps you've had a new postperson in the past 6 months and he doesn't like the way they walk or something! If all else fails, you will have to get a cage for the door or a mailbox for outside.

I have an 8 year old Jack Russell that has this habit - she never used to bother then we had kids that used to come up and aggravate the dogs by knocking the letterbox so since then she has got the post - at first she would just catch it and bring it to us but now she destroys it - it can be a bit costly when she keeps eating your driving licence !!
We got the letter box guards that everyone else has recommended - only thing was this made our problem worse as she would get frustrated because she couldn't get the post - she ended up hanging off of the guard and bending it completely out of shape, so much so that the post would fall right through.
You have to get to the root of the problem or get a letter box that goes on an outside wall so that they don't put it through your door.
You can try blocking the path to the front door (a stair gate ?) and when he doesn't rip the post up then praise him lots - having him on a lead when the post arrives and keeping him calm and sat let him see the post come in and praise/reward if he doesn't move.
It will just take time.

We have the same problem at the moment!! I think some post landed on our dog while she was sleeping and since then she attacks it!!
The best thing you can do is what we did ...... Buy a post cage that you fit on the inside to catch the post then they cant get at it, they are quite cheep and the best solution!!

I believe you mean the mail....if so....find a way ro keep the dog from it.....if it comes through a slot in the door...see if you can't put some kind of box around the slot....or crate the dog
If you mean a literal post...like a fence post....surely you aren't replacing it everyday...lol
Good Luck with that!!

One of my dogs does that too - generally someone's up to get it before he does though, and then he just sniffs the envelopes.
Odd little blighter.

Get a basket that fits over your letterbox so the dog cannot get to it.
