The first step is to check that the file you're looking to play is Windows Media Player compatible. Quicktime files, for example, won't play. Neither will a file associated with Real Player.

Secondly, make certain you have the most current version of WMP for your Windows Operating System. You can check this by going to microsoft.com and searching for Windows Media Player updates.

Third, make certain the web browser you're using is compatible with Windows Media Player.

Last, make certain you aren't blocking any Active X controls and your internet security is set correctly.

It's a little difficult to give you a better answer without knowing more specific details regarding your problem, such as:

1) The browser you use
2) What sort of files you try to play
3) If this happens all the time or only when you visit certain sites
4) Whether or not the files require licenses to play

There are many other possible issues- the solutions I've typed above should get you pointed in the correct direction,

Good luck
