that is an okay distance on a train, but no further, and keep in mind that there is no smoking on Amtrak. I made the mistake of going from Providence to San Francisco by train, and will never do that again. 12 hours without a cigarette at a time, for 5 days?! I think not. The bus is usually cheaper. And an airplane just might be the same price.

Traveled from Texas to New Jersey by train. HORRIBLE experience. More than 35 hours with a two year old. I'm not sure how long it will take you to get from Ohio to Mass but if it's more than a couple of hours I would recommend getting a sleeper. I personally, will never do it again. Good luck!

Yes, it worth it just because it's a unique experience.I've traveled rail from Rennsaelear NY to Chicago Ill.,essentially the same run you and others posting here have. Whether you like the trip or not depends on your attitude. Even with the airport security delays, air travel is still faster. Set a loose arrival time and you'll be fine.Sometimes Amtrak stops for "service" or has to let freight traffic past,so you aren't continually moving.Take a lap-top, a camera, book,or sudoko as you'll have plenty of time to relax.

Yes I rode on an Amtrak last year from Kansas City to Chicago and it was a really cool experience I got to see a lot of sights and I rode in the observation car the whole time that was really cool and the food they have in the dining car is really good so yes I would recommend it's not as fast as an airplane but you get to see all the beautiful sights this country has to offer and I think it's one of those experiences you never forget.

I have ridden between Buffalo and Springfield a number of times. The freedom to get up and move about is so much more relaxing that being shoe-horned into a bus seat for hours.
If flying isn't in your future (as it is not in mine...I will NOT submit myself to the security scrutiny so that high school drop-out TSA employees can play cop) then the only choice is the train. Everyone gripes about the cost and the time, but it is worth it to me and you can actually arrive refreshed after a nice nap. The seats are nearly twice the size of a bus seat.

It might be a bit slow and expensive. Map it out by car PLUS rental, then compare the costs.
Trains are kind of fun. I have used Amtrak from Springfield, MA to Chicago, then Chicago to Denver. We had Sleeper Cars, so it was for the "Train Experience", but certainly not the cheap way to get there.
My wife once went from Seattle to Minneapolis by Amtrak.

Yeah trains are pretty good but you should probably go with someone else or you'll be stuck next to a stranger. Then again that would happen on a plane too, but anyways trains are a good way to travel.

If you manage to negotiate the US trip successfully, you may want to try the Bombay-New Delhi train trip (yes, it is outside the US). Among the cool features: you can buy cheap yet wonderful Chai when you wake up at 6amish; you get it in a small clay cup and after you finish drinking (wonderful, hot aromatic liquid), you throw the cup onto the train tracks.
Bon Voyage!

I traveled from Denver to Boston on Amtrak and loved the trip. Take the train at least once in your life.

Yes, I would highly recommend it, you should have a great trip especially if you enjoy watching the world go by outside your window, it is very scenic just about whichever route you would take. In any event, Amtrak can get you there (at least for a direct connection) and you can check their website for current fares for your arrival and destination points. Have a great trip!
