Soon, I will be finished with high school and moving on into college. I plan to receive a degree in engineering and I need to know which engineering field, or fields, has the best outlook in and around Montana.

You should not make a choice of a career based on what you think is a good employment field. You should make the choice based on what you like and what you are good at.

Any prediction of the employment situation 4 or 5 years from now is not likely to be very accurate. Any competent engineer will always do well.

Also many engineers end up working in field other than the one they got their degree in. One of the best mechanical equipment engineers in my company has a degree in electrical engineering.

I disagree somewhat with the others - I have a couple philosophies.

Either
1) Follow the money - and learn to like whatever one that is and when the money starts to run out re-educate and follow the new money.

2) Decide what you like as an industry (automotive, health care, energy, etc.) and then look for 3-4 companies that really excel and are praised for job satisfaction and creativity opportunities. Do whatever it takes to get hired at those companies by finding out what they need and then try to get internships startin gyour sophomore year.

I don't go along with this follow your heart business - sh*t costs money dude.

Do what you love, the money will find you. Remember this, there are no pockets in coffins, because you can't take it with you!!!
As to actual advice, I think materiels science is one that will have the most legs. Or, become a car mechanic w/ an AAS degree.
