i believe my dog is in false pregnacy, how long will this period last and what should i expect in the future?

Q. What are the signs of false pregnancy in dogs?

A. Some female dogs (bitches) fail to go out of their heat cycles correctly. This causes a condition we call 'false pregnancy.' Even though the ***** may not have mated with a male dog, her body believes it is pregnant due to some incorrect hormonal stimulations that it is receiving.
False pregnancy occurs 60-80 days after the ***** was in heat, about the time a pregnant ***** would give birth. (Pregnancy in a dog lasts about 63 days.) A dog experiencing a false pregnancy may have some abdominal swelling and/or engorgement of the mammary glands which can be painful. In some cases, the ***** will actually produce milk, make a nest, and even collect socks or toys and hold them against her breasts. Bitches undergoing false heats generally do not experience serious long-term problems, since the behavior disappears when the circulating hormones return to their appropriate levels. However, some bitches may have a false pregnancy with each heat.

One of the advantages of spaying your dog is that you can eliminate the possibility of this condition occurring.

It will last from a few weeks to longer. Getting your dog spay may stop this from happening but no guarantee especially if your dog is older. It will most likely get worse as the dog gets older if she is not spay

I can't believe Foster & smith listed this as an adnormal homone condition, Because those of us in preformance dog sports know that every female dog is hormonally pregant every time. It affects their preformance profoundly. Hard to be atheletic when you pregnant. I don't think anyone knows why some react by mothering toys and some don't but if they do it after one heat they are more likly to after others.
Most of us just giggle & wait for it to be over.

A lot of my young dogs have false preg. They usually return to normal about 2-3 weeks past the "due" date. I usually don't have older dogs doing it. So it will depend on the individual. Maybe you could get hormone treatments for her to reduce the symptoms.

Oh i was going to say Spay her but I guess you can't if you show her. If you ever stop showing her tho, spay her

I had a dobberman that had false pregnancies. Don't remember how long she would do that. Ask your vet
